About Us.

What We Do
Coulson Macleod was formed in March 2009 and is a UK-based art business specialising in the design and production of handmade, typography-based artwork printed onto natural and reclaimed materials including wood, metal, stone, fabric, and recycled paper.

Why We're Different
With a background that includes almost 25 years in the graphic design industry, we see ourselves first and foremost as designers, rather than artists. So, not only are we interested in the printed image, we're also just as passionate about the material our artwork is printed on, and the three-dimensional form it takes as a physical object. Each of these areas is integral to the art we produce, and it's what makes our work so unique and special.

Old Meets New
We like to incorporate the old with the new. This is our design principle in life and it carries through to our art, so, while we might use a modern quote from popular culture, we'll place it on some 100-year-old reclaimed Victorian roof timbers for instance. Or we'll use hand-stamped lettering alongside high-end digital printing. Or we'll distress computer-generated text by repeatedly running it through an old photocopier. Or we'll leave shiny new steel sheets outside in the rain until they've developed just the right patina of rust. You get the picture. It's this desire to mix up traditional and modern techniques, materials and styles that makes our work so interesting to us, and to our customers too.

Handmade & Unique
Each piece of Coulson Macleod artwork is individually handmade in the UK by traditional craftsmen. Any imperfections in the material used are retained to add character to the finished pieces. These can include knots, water marks, and nail holes in reclaimed timber, chips in stone, and rust on steel. This way no two pieces are ever exactly alike, and every artwork produced is unique. By design.
