1. A lovely little POLAROID

ITEMS REQUIRED

  • Polaroid Print

  • Small Wooden Peg or Clip

  • Scissors

  • Tape

  • Twine

Wonderfully retro. A mini polaroid print is perfectly sized for adding to your gift wrap; a decorative present topper and gift tag all in one. If you happen to have a polaroid camera lying around the house, you could take a brand new snap for this make. If the present is from a secret admirer, perhaps an arty photo of a bunch of roses will do?

There are many print companies around today that offer Polaroid-style prints of existing photos. Try LaLaLab or Photobox. You can upload your favourite couple selfie or a shot from your last romantic getaway together. They can then keep the photo in their wallet or on their desk.

TIP: Use a permanent marker to write a name, special date or simply just a heart on the bottom of the polaroid. It's really rather lovely to incorporate your own handwriting.

2. paper hearts garland

ITEMS REQUIRED

  • Scissors

  • Heart-shaped palm punch (optional)

  • Newspaper

  • Hole punch

  • Tape

  • Twine

We used a heart-shaped palm punch for this one. They can be purchased from many craft stores and online retailers but you can also cut out hearts by hand using a pair of scissors (if you have the patience!). You can use a newspaper for a wordy, rustic look or any coloured paper of your choice.

Then, with your chosen materials, simply cut out as many hearts as you'd like. A small handful will look delicate and minimalist. A whole row of them will look equally as pretty. Use a hole punch in the centre of each heart, thread them through some twine and wrap it around your gift.

TIP: For the paper hearts, print out an extract from you and your loved one's favourite classic romance novel or one of Shakespeare's love sonnets. An extra special personalised touch.

3. HAND-STAMPED HEARTS

ITEMS REQUIRED

  • 1 x Large potato

  • Chopping board

  • Small knife

  • Acrylic Paint

  • Tape

We're taking you back to your school days now (pre-school, nursery even) with... potato-stamping. Yes, we know it's probably been a while. Embrace your inner child and have some fun with this one. Cut the potato in half and carve out a heart on the cut side. Then dip the potato in some paint and stamp away.

It's a perfect craft make to enjoy with small children if you have a cute Valentine's tradition of gift-giving from your kids to your husband or wife. Although, of course, please do take extra care with sharp objects when cutting the potato.

TIP: You can cut a notch out of the top of the potato half to use as a handle. It gives you a better grip when stamping.

4. TWINE-WRAPPED CARDBOARD HEART

ITEMS REQUIRED

  • Cardboard

  • Scissors

  • Marker Pen

  • Twine or Wool

  • Tape

Here's another easy craft make that you probably remember from your youth. Reminiscent of handmade pom poms. Cut out a heart shape from an old piece of cardboard. Grab a long length of twine, wool or yarn. Tape the end of the thread to the back of the cardboard and... wrap, wrap, wrap.

This idea ended up being a little bit more time consuming than the others. You do need a surprising amount of twine. Although, Nat, our studio assistant found it rather therapeutic. We chose deep pink because, well, it's romantic isn't it? But you can certainly choose any colour or style. Once you've finished, simply drape the remaining length of twine around the back of the present and secure it in place like an adorable mini wreath.

5. hand-drawn vase & flowers

ITEMS REQUIRED

  • Pencil

  • Marker Pen

  • Twine

  • A sprig of leaves or small bunch of flowers

  • Tape

Well, this one is quite simply our favourite. Flowers (roses in particular) have long been associated with Valentine's Day. Draw a simple outline of a vase onto your wrapping paper. Perhaps a slimline fluted shape (as shown) or a more rustic mason jar style if you're feeling connected to your inner artist.

Next, tie a bow around a sprig of leaves or a small bunch of flowers and tape them at the neck of the hand-drawn vase. Voila! A beautiful and unique present topper. They can also remove the flowers and pop them in a real vase once they've opened their gift. We used a rather on-trend bunch of dried flowers here for their longevity.

TIP: If you're unsure, use a pencil to sketch out the vase before you make it permanent with the marker pen.

BONUS TIP: If you decide to use fresh flowers, we'd recommend making this gift wrap on the day you'll be giving the present. Otherwise, the petals and leaves may wilt and shrivel.
